     Ernest Albert Miles was born on 5 January 1880 at Sacramento, California, son of William R. Miles and Maria Dana. The 1900 Census has him born in January 1878. His WWI Draft card lists him as born on 6 January 1880.3,1,4,5

Ernest Albert Miles was enumerated with William R. Miles on the census of 1 June 1880 at Sacramento as Ernanst. Listed as 5 months old born in Wisconsin.6
[Witness] lived with William R. Miles and Maria Miles and Pearl Annie Miles, Maria Margarita Miles, George Dana Miles and Robert William Miles in 1896 at at Milpas Street between Figueroa & Carrillo Streets, Santa Barbara, California. The city directory lists him as an architect. The directory does not list woment or children so only the youngest are included here.7 As of 29 May 1898, Ernest Albert Miles was also known as Albert Earnest Miles (the foregoing from his father's Civil War pension file affidavit).5

Ernest Albert Miles was enumerated with Robert William Miles on the census of 6 June 1900 at 610 Eddy Street, San Francisco, California, as Earnest Miles. Listed as 22 years old, born in January, 1878, single living with his brother Robert Miles, born in California whereas his mother and father born in New Hampshire, can read, write and speak English. Working as a confectioner.8


Ernest married Elizabeth Melinda Jones, daughter of Thomas Morgan Jones and Malinda Elizabeth Drummond, on 6 January 1903 at 1201 Garden Street, Santa Barbara. Wedding attendees included Ellen J. Marshall and John Marshall. The wedding was held at the home of Mr. & Mrs. John Marshall who befriended Elizabeth while she worked in Santa Barbara. Mrs. Marshall was born in Story County, Iowa.9 He was listed as a clerk in 1904 at Santa Barbara. The employer was not identified.10 He and Elizabeth Melinda Jones lived at 507 West De La Guerra Street, Santa Barbara from 1904 to 1905. Elizabeth was not listed in the 1905 Directory.10,11 He was listed as a driver from 1905 to 1906 at Keran Laundry Company.11,12 He and Elizabeth Melinda Jones lived at 600 West Ortega Street, Santa Barbara 1906 with Nell Elizabeth Miles and Nelson Albert Miles. Elizabeth and children were not listed in the 1906 Directory.12 He and Elizabeth Melinda Jones moved from Santa Barbara to L.A. after Nelson and Nell were born and bought a house at 2910 West 14th. Los Angeles just before the World War 1. They bought a piece of land out in the San Fernando Valley and built a nice two story Spanish style house using money Elizabeth inherited. Ernest refused to ok extra money needed to enlarge width of the house by six feet. Circa 1907 at 2910 West 14th Street, Los Angeles, California.13

Listed as 32 years old, married for 7 years, born in California whereas his mother in Illinois and his father in New York, can read, write and speak English. Rents his home. Working as an commercial salesman. Enumerated with the head of household was/were Elizabeth Melinda Jones, Nelson Albert Miles, William Jones Miles and Nell Elizabeth Miles.14
Ernest was registered for the WWI Draft on 18 September 1918 at Local Board Division No. 12, Pico & El Molino, Los Angeles, California. Listed his birthday as 6 January 1880. Employment as Commercial Salesman for Grether & Grether. Living at 2910 W. 14th Street, Los Angeles.15

Ernest Albert Miles is shown as head of household on the US census of 8 January 1920 at Los Angeles as Earnest A. Miles. He was listed as 40 years old, born in California, mother and father birthplace, can read and write, can speak English, his occupation was 'salesman'. Enumerated with the head of household was/were Nell Elizabeth Miles, Nelson Albert Miles, Harry Crossett Miles, William Jones Miles and Elizabeth Melinda Jones.16
He applying for membership in 1923. In the Sons of Veterans, U.S.A., citing his father's service in the Illinois Infantry during the "War of the Rebellion, 1861-65".17 He filled out an application for membership in Gen. W.S. Rosecrans, Camp 2, California-Pacific Division of the 'Sons of Veterans during the War of the Rebellion' and indicated his occupation as 'salesman' in 1923 at Los Angeles.4 He initiated into the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1492 on 3 May 1929 at Inglewood, California.18

Ernest Albert Miles is shown as head of household on the US census of 5 April 1930 at 2910 West 15th Street, Los Angeles, California, as Earnest A. Miles. Listed as 50 years old, married at age 23, owns his $10,000 home with a radio, born in California whereas his mother was born in Illinois while his father was born in New York, he can read, write and speak English, currently employed as a dry goods salesman. Not a veteran. Enumerated with the head of household was/were Elizabeth Melinda Jones, Nelson Albert Miles, Harry Crossett Miles, William Jones Miles, Nell Elizabeth Miles and Peggy Thorpe.19
He sold property described as Lot 8 in Block "C" of Harvard Heights Tract per map in Book 3 Page 59 at 4705 Whitsett Avenue, North Hollywood, California, to Elizabeth Melinda Miles on 13 July 1936. Have not been able to verify that this property is in fact 4705 Whitsett Avenue. Also did not find Ernest's acquistion of same.20 He and Elizabeth Melinda Jones lived at North Hollywood from 1936 to 1945.3,13 He credited for wages in 1937. Of $1487.76.3 He credited for wages in 1938. Of $1,698.65.3 He contracted Colon Cancer circa 1940.13 Somewhere around 1940 Ernest Miles owned a cabin at Big Bear Lake in San Bernadino County. The cabin was destroyed in a flash flood.13 He was a Traveling Salesman during the World War 2, working for Grether & Grether Wholesale-Dry goods (territory was in the Mojave Desert: San Bernardino, Fresno, Pumpkin Patch, Lancaster, Johannesburg, Randsburg and all the little towns in between) circa 1941.13 In 1945 Ernest and Elizabeth sold their house and moved to Hemet, California. There, at 1800 East Whittier, they had a ranch of 15 acres of apricots and they also had chickens in the begining (Elizabeth ('Nanny') never was so keen on the chicken part).13 He and Elizabeth Melinda Miles bought property described as Lot 3 in Block 179 of Lands of Hemet Land Company as shown by map in Book 1 Page 14 at Dartmouth Street & Whittier Avenue, Hemet, California, on 8 June 1945. This is a ten acre lot.21 He left a will on 22 April 1946 at Hemet, California. His estate was bequeathed to beloved wife Elizabeth M. Miles except for one dollar to each of their four children.22 According to his death certificate, Ernest was operated on for "Adenocarcinoma of Rectum" in 1946.23 There was a family gathering in Hemet in the late 1940s.13 He made a charter member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1740 on 3 April 1948 at Hemet.18
Ernest and Elizabeth Melinda Jones received a letter about 6 February 1950, from Bill Miles,describing life in Saudi Arabia.24 He died of six months of malnutrition, adenocarcinoma of sigmoid on 22 October 1951 at Hemet at age 71.23,1,25 He was buried on 25 October 1951 in the Valhalla Memorial Park located in North Hollywood, California. Attendees included Floyd Howard Gould, Nell Elizabeth Gould, Nelson Albert Miles, Grace Irene Miles, Lorna Irene Miles, Marilyn Elizabeth Miles, Yvonne Louise Gould, Harry Crossett Miles, Helen Grace Miles, Caroline Elizabeth Gould and Maybell Inez Miles Services held at the Fillbach Funeral Home, Burbank. Officiated by the Elks Lodge 1740 of Hemet, California.25,13
