     Nell Elizabeth Miles was born on 6 September 1903 at Santa Barbara, California, daughter of Ernest Albert Miles and Elizabeth Melinda Jones. She was born as a twin with brother Nelson. They were each about 2.5 pounds at birth and not expected to live since there were no incubators available in Santa Barbara.^1,2 [Witness] lived with Ernest Albert Miles and Elizabeth Melinda Jones and Nelson Albert Miles in 1906 at at 600 West Ortega Street, Santa Barbara. Elizabeth and children were not listed in the 1906 Directory.³

Nell Elizabeth Miles was enumerated with Ernest Albert Miles on the census of 8 January 1920 at 2910 West 14th Street, Los Angeles, California, as Nellie E. Miles. Listed as 'Nellie', 16 years old, attending school, born in California, mother in Iowa and father born in California, can read and write, can speak English, occupation 'none'.⁵
She was graduated in 1924 from High School Nell repeated the first grade, so she was 21 years on graduating from high school.²

Nell married Floyd Howard Gould, son of Charles Edwin Gould and Bertha Rosalia Decker, on 6 January 1930 at Los Angeles, California.⁶ As of 6 January 1930,her married name was Gould.

Nell Elizabeth Miles was enumerated with Ernest Albert Miles on the census of 5 April 1930 at 2910 West 15th Street, Los Angeles, California, as Nell E. Miles. Listed as 26 years old, single, born in California whereas her mother was born in Iowa while her father was born in California, she can read, write and speak English, currently employed as a dentist assistant.⁷
At age 29, Nell became the mother of Caroline Elizabeth Gould on 24 June 1933 at San Pedro, California. She and Caroline Elizabeth Gould travelled via the Matson Lines SS Mariposa in February 1934 to Honolulu, Hawaii to visit Floyd Howard Gould. Travel expenses were picked up by Nell's parents, Ernest and Melinda Miles.² She and Caroline Elizabeth Gould returned from Hawaii after visiting husband/father Floyd Gould in August 1934 at Los Angeles. They travelled via the Matson Lines' SS Lurline with expenses picked up by Nell's parents Ernest and Malinda Miles.^8,2 She lived with Floyd Howard Gould and Yvonne Louise Gould and Caroline Elizabeth Gould from January 1938 to June 1941 at 3327 Kaimuki Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii.² She and Caroline Elizabeth Gould returned to the United States from Hawaii on the Army Transport Sergeant C. E. Mower in June 1941. Bonnie Gould was with them as well.² She witnessed the beginning of World War 2 with the Japanese attack on 7 December 1941 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. On Sunday, 7 December 1941, on 7 December 1941. On Christmas Eve, 1941, unarmed US freighter SS Absaroka is shelled by Japanese submarine I17 about 26 miles of San Pedro, California. Although abandoned, the ship is later towed to San Pedro. On the same day, US ship SS Dorothy Philips is shelled by Japanese submarine I23 off Monterey Bay, California. Two days earlier, Japanese submarine I19 shelled US tanker H.M. Storey southwest of Cape Mendocino, California, but failed to score any hits. On 24 December 1941.⁹ She and Floyd Howard Gould having moved there after leaving Hawaii from January 1942 to June 1945 at 216 Nieto Avenue, Long Beach, California.¹⁰ Caroline Elizabeth Gould, Nell Elizabeth Miles and Yvonne Louise Gould was visited by Floyd Howard Gould who travelled while Chester was in San Diego, in May 1942 to Long Beach.² She travelled to Northern California in July 1942 to visit Floyd Howard Gould. Caroline Elizabeth Gould and Yvonne Louise Gould accompanied her. The USS Chester had returned from the South Pacific for overhaul. The family was probably driven north by Nell's parents, since Nell could not drive. Carol remembers six year old Bonnie, seeing Nell and Floyd embracing, asking: "who's kissing my mother?"² She and Caroline Elizabeth Gould were travel Travelled to Norfolk to visit husband Floyd Gould during command of LST-926. In 1944 at Norfolk, Virginia. Attended a family gathering in Hemet, California circa 1949.² She and Floyd Howard Gould travelled by car from his station at Mohave, California in 1947 to Vernon, Texas to visit Roy Decker. Caroline Elizabeth Gould and Yvonne Louise Gould accompanied them.² She lived with Floyd Howard Gould and Caroline Elizabeth Gould and Yvonne Louise Gould from 1948 to 1952 at 1857 Stearnlee Avenue, Long Beach, California. While Floyd was stationed in Natchoug and elsewhere. This home was purchased and sold by Floyd and Nell for about $10,000.² The family gathered at the Gould home on Stearnlee in Long Beach in 1949. Maude Gould, wife of Chas took the picture.² Floyd Howard Gould and Nell Elizabeth Gould sold home on property Lot 167 of Tract 14129, as per map in Book 305 Pages 48-50 at Long Beach on 19 October 1951. There is a mystery about how this sale took place prior to the purchase by Floyd and Nell.¹¹ She attended the burial of Ernest Albert Miles on 25 October 1951 at in the Valhalla Memorial Park located in North Hollywood, California.^12,2 Floyd Howard Gould and Nell Elizabeth Gould bought home on property Lot 167 of Tract 14129, as per map in Book 305 Pages 48-50 at Long Beach on 1 November 1951. As trustees they were granted a Joint Tenancy Grant Deed from widow Bess M. Diggers.¹³ She lived with Floyd Howard Gould and Caroline Elizabeth Gould and Yvonne Louise Gould in 1952 at 4656 Granger Street, San Diego, California.² She lived with Floyd Howard Gould and Caroline Elizabeth Gould and Yvonne Louise Gould from 1952 to 1957 at 5083 Debby Drive, San Diego, California.² She attended the marriage of Caroline Elizabeth Gould and James Eugene Radja on 29 August 1954 at North Island Chapel, San Diego, California.² She lived with Floyd Howard Gould circa __ ___ 1957 to ca 1967 at 7335 Ouro Place, La Mesa, California.² She lived with Floyd Howard Gould circa __ ___ 1967 to ca 1974 at 3179 Driscoll Drive, San Diego, California.^14,2 She attended the burial of Floyd Howard Gould on 19 April 1974 at in the El Camino Memorial Park located in San Diego, California.^15,16 She lived from 1976 to 1984 at 140 Allen Court, Newbury Park. This was a 'double-wide' mobile home close to daughter Bonnie in Thousand Oaks. Son-in-Law Dennis Dilworth built the hand railing for the double-wide's entry.¹⁷ Four generations of ladies gathered on Christmas 1981 at the Radja home in Vienna Virginia.² She died on 11 August 1984 at Thousand Oaks, California, at age 80.¹⁸ She was buried on 15 August 1984 San Diego. Attendees included Carol Radja, Liz Syverson, Gregory Andrew Radja, Norman Moores, Nelson Albert Miles, Harry Crossett Miles, Helen Grace Miles, Myrtle Julia Dilworth, Bonnie Dilworth, Donna Louise Dilworth, Virginia Anne Dilworth, Michael Carl Dilworth, Robert Dean Hinds, Karen Christine Dilworth, Marilyn Elizabeth Moores, Charles Albert Moores and Sherry Lynn Kirilouckas Viewings were held in Thousand Oaks for friends living at the mobile home park and then another in San Diego at the cemetery. Nell was laid to rest next to husband Floyd. Friends attending the viewing or funeral included Mr. & Mrs. Douglas Price, Mr. & Mrs. John D. Jones, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Duperron, Rose Schlosberg, and Lilith Meyer.^19,2
