Carl Bartleson, ca 1908
     Reference: 130. Carl Peter Bartleson was born on 4 November 1872 at Bjoralteiet, Hadeland, Oppland, son of Anders Bertelson and Ingeborg Gulbrandson.2,3

Carl arrived as an immigrant aboard the SS Scythia when 15 years old in 1887. He emigrated from Oslo, Norway. He arrived in Boston, Massachusetts in March 1889 as Carl Peter Anderson. He also arrived in the US in October 1903 at New York.3

Carl married Mary Halvorson in 1898 at Iowa.4

Carl Peter Bartleson was on the census of 15 June 1900 at Main Street, Spencer City, Iowa, as Carl Bartleson. Listed as 27 year old boarder married for two years, born in November 1872 in Norway as were his mother and father, immigrated 10 years ago in 1890, an alien. Can read, write and speak English. Occupation is contractor, unemployed for three months. Fellow boarder Conrad Bartleson, age 20 and single, also born in Norway is a day laborer unemployed for four months.4
He was a building contractor circa 1907 at Leeds, North Dakota.5

Carl married Anna Fossĺ, daughter of Haldor Fossaaen and Johanna Johnsdotter, on 10 December 1908 at Minot, North Dakota.6,3

Carl Peter Bartleson is shown as head of household on the US census of 19 April 1910 at Minot as Carl Bartleson. Listed as 37 years old, married for one year, owning his house with a mortgage, born in Norway as were his mother and his father. Can read, write and speak English. Currently self employed as a stone work contractor. Enumerated with the head of household was/were Henry Iver Bartleson, Anna Fossĺ, Anna Matilda Bartleson, Jacob Anton Bartleson and Ingle Oscar Bartleson.7
Carl was registered for the World War I draft on 12 September 1918 at North Dakota. Listed himself as a farmer, born 4 November 1872.2

Carl Peter Bartleson is shown as head of household on the US census of 12 January 1920 at North Dakota as Carl Bartleson., listed as 48 years old, owning his farm, able to read and write, born in Norway, father and mother born in Norway, cannot speak English, occupation 'farmer', immigrated in 1890, still an alien. Enumerated with the head of household was/were Anna Fossĺ, Anna Matilda Bartleson, Henry Iver Bartleson, Myrtle Julia Bartleson, Elmer Marvin Bartleson and Carl Bjarne Bartleson.8
He lived in North Dakota and in Seattle, Washington. He was a partner in Bartleson & Ness, general contractors. See the attached exhibit for a list of buildings accomplished. List assumed to be by Angeline Sawula.9

Carl Peter Bartleson is shown as head of household on the US census of 15 April 1930 at 6824 17th Avenue NE, Seattle, Washington, as Carl Bartleson. Listed as 57 years old, first married at age 37 years, owns his $7,200 home without a radio, born in Norway, father born in Norway, mother born in Norway, can read and write and speak English, native language is Norwegian. Immigrated in 1891, naturalized, employed as a contractor in building construction. Enumerated with the head of household was/were Elmer Marvin Bartleson, Angeline Clarise Bartleson, Helen Evelyn Bartleson and Anna Fossĺ.10
He filed a Declaration of Intention for Naturalization on 27 December 1940 at Stanley, North Dakota. He declared himself to be a rancher and farmer, height 6 feet 1 inches, 195 pounds, grey hair and blue eyes, with a scar on the left wrist, born near Stavenger, Norway on 1 March 1880. He emigrated from Oslo, Norway on the SS Scythia. He arrived in Boston, Massachusetts in March 1889 as Carl Peter Anderson. He also arrived in the US in October 1903 at New York. He married Anna Bartleson 10 December 1908. He has six children born at various places in the US.11 Carl was never naturalized, according to his wife Anna's Naturalization Petition.12 He died on 23 March 1944 at Jamestown, North Dakota, at age 71. A biography of the Bartleson's appeared in the 'Burke County and White Earth Valley Historical Society' book in 1971.13 A biography of Carl and Anna appeared in the 'Tales of Mighty Mountrail' in 1979.14
