     Reference: 129.1 Anna Fossĺ was born on 1 March 1880 at Hjelmeland Kommune, daughter of Haldor Fossaaen and Johanna Johnsdotter.2,3,1

Anna at age 23 arrived as an immigrant aboard the SS Saxonia (having departed from Liverpool on 8 September) with Lars L. Nesvig at age 17 and Bertha L. Nesvig at age 19 on 17 September 1903 at Boston, Massachusetts. They were on their way to North Dakota; Anna to her brothers Odd and John in Leeds and the Nesvigs to their brother Martinius in Buxton. The Nesvigs were relatives from a neighboring farm in Norway.4,5 She was granted a US Land Patent for 159.64 acres in North Dakota, Mountrail County described as Township 157-North, Range 93-West, Meridian 5th PM:

on 14 September 1907 at 157-N, North Dakota.6 She and Hanna Fossĺ travelled to the United States on the SS Lusitania from a Norway visit by Anna. On 9 October 1908 to Ellis Island, New York, New York. Anna is listed on the Lusitania's manifest as a non-immigrant single female 28 years old, farmer, able to read and write, nationality Norway, ethnicity Norwegian, last permanent residence, for 3 months, was Skiftun, Norway near Havenger, nearest relative in Norway is father Haldor Fossaa of Skiftun, Norway. Final destination is Minot, North Dakota; has ticket to Minneapolis, Minnesota, passage was paid for by self. Has $20 cash. Height of 5ft 4.5in with bright complexion and blonde hair and blue eyes. No identifying marks and born in Skiftun (near Havenger), Norway.7

Anna married Carl Peter Bartleson, son of Anders Bertelson and Ingeborg Gulbrandson, on 10 December 1908 at Minot, North Dakota.8,1 Her married name was Anna Bartleson.1

Anna Fossĺ was enumerated with Carl Peter Bartleson on the census of 19 April 1910 at Minot as Hannah Bartleson. Listed as 30 years old, married for one year with no children born, born in Norway as were her mother and father, immigrated in 1904, naturalized. Cannot read or write but can speak English. Occupation is 'none'.9


Anna Fossĺ was enumerated with Carl Peter Bartleson on the census of 12 January 1920 at North Dakota as Anna Bartleson. Listed as 40 years old, able to read and write, born in Norway, father and mother born in Norway, cannot speak English, occupation 'none', immigrated in 1904, still an alien.10


Anna Fossĺ was enumerated with Carl Peter Bartleson on the census of 15 April 1930 at 6824 17th Avenue NE, Seattle, Washington, as Anna Bartleson. Listed as 50 years old, first married at age 28 years, born in Norway, father born in Norway, mother born in Norway, can read and write and speak English, native language is Norwegian. Immigrated in 1903, naturalized, occupation is 'none'.11
She filed a Declaration of Intention for Naturalization on 27 December 1940 at Stanley, North Dakota. She declared herself to be a houswife, height 5 feet 4 inches, 150 pounds, brown hair and blue eyes, born near Stavenger, Norway on 1 March 1880. She emigrated from Stavenger, Norway; she arrived in New York in October 1903 as Anna Fossaa. She married Carl Peter Bartleson 10 December 1908 at Minot, North Dakota. She has only four children born at various places in the US. Carl's first two children were with wife Mary Halvorson.8 Anna is said to have sent these shoes to her relatives during WW2. They were retreived by Dennis Dilworth on their trip to Norway.12 She filed a Petition for Naturalization on 22 July 1944 at Stanley. She is a widow, her husband was 'not naturalized'. Her Petition was witnessed by Mrs. Gertrude Stevens and Mrs. Mae Peterson , both of Sanish, ND. She indicated arriving in the US in Boston, aboard the SS Saxonia on 17 September 1903. She indicated having left the US once in June, 1908 from New York and returning in October 1908 in New York aboard the SS Lusitania. She took her oath of allegiance to the United States a month later on 23 August 1944. Naturalization Certificate 5796755 was issued to her.13 She died on 26 April 1969 at Minot at age 89.1,3 A biography of the Bartleson's appeared in the 'Burke County and White Earth Valley Historical Society' book in 1971.14 A biography of Carl and Anna appeared in the 'Tales of Mighty Mountrail' in 1979.15
