He was graduated from Sanish High School, Sanish, North Dakota.⁶ He was working as a rancher at New Town, North Dakota. He apparently remained as a New Town rancher until his death.⁶

Elmer married Elsie Viola Todd, daughter of Herbert Wesley Todd and Anna Erickson, on 5 October 1963 at Gospel Tabernacle Church, New Town, North Dakota. Wedding attendees included Reverend Don Waggoner, Paul Wheeler, Violet Merie Todd, Arthur E. Todd, Earl Satterthwaite, Ervin Ventsch, Ordean Fossaa, Leslie Wheeler, Wesley Wheeler, Ola Fossĺ and Haldis Vinje. The couple honeymooned in Canada.⁶ He died on 25 May 2003 at New Town at age 86.³
