His service record shows him as single, being born in 1918, having three years of high school with a civilian occupation of "gas and oil man".⁴ He Was a salesman in a childrens clothing store.⁵

Herman married Arlene Rose Prutzman, daughter of Ervin Prutzman and Rosalia Casterline.⁵ He died in February 1961 at age 42.³
