Philip Granich - 1968
     Philip Martin Granich was born on 24 October 1889 at Donji Muć, Dalmatia, son of Giuseppe Granić and Cvita Granić.3 For many years in America, Filip used 11 November 1889 as his birthday, including his Naturalization certificate and his grave stone.6,7,1,2 Philip Martin Granich was also known as Filip Granić This was his birth name in Croatia.3

Philip at age 24 arrived as an immigrant aboard the SS Main with Ivan Granić on 7 November 1913 at Baltimore, Maryland. The SS Main left Bremen on 23 October. Filip and Ivan were on their way to St. Louis, Missouri to be with cousin Ante Granic at 1729 Dekalb Street. Filip is listed as 24 years old, single and 5' 6" tall. Both were listed as farm labor who could neither read or write. Their last address was Spalato, Dalmatia and both are listed as being born in Spalato. Filip has a father Josef Granic in Muc, Dalmatia and Ivan, at 30 years old, has a wife Mara in Spalato.4 This image shows how close to the Marasovich family and future wife Zora Philip lived in St Louis upon arrival in America.

On 5 June 1917, Philip registered for the military draft for World War 1. He registered in the 20th district of Chicago listing his address as 10718 Mackinaw Ave, being a single alien of age 27, born on 25 February 1889 in Croatia, Austria. Note that this birth date does not agree with other available information. He listed his employment as a laborer at Federal Furnace in South Chicago. Initial examination of the card appears to say that he also listed one year of previous military service in the Austrian Navy. The card is difficult to read and must be further examined.8

Philip married Zora Granich, daughter of Andrija Marasović and Ivanica Prkić, on 10 February 1918 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Croatian Catholic Church, 2864 E. 96th Street, Chicago, Illinois.9 At age 29, Philip became the father of Marie Evelyn Granich on 27 May 1919 at Chicago, Illinois.2

Philip Martin Granich is shown as head of household on the US census of 31 January 1920 at 10347 Avenue "H", Chicago, Illinois, as Phillip Granich. Listed as 28 years old (possibly born in 1892?), renting, shown as having immigrated in 1913 and naturalization petition applied for, born in Austrian Dalmatia as was his mother and father, he cannot read or write but can speak English, occupation is 'laborer in steel mill'. Enumerated with the head of household was/were Marie Evelyn Granich, Zora Granich and Marion Radnich.10
At age 30, Philip became the father of Joseph August Granich on 4 August 1920 at Chicago.6,11,2 At age 34, Philip became the father of Florence Barbara Granich on 4 December 1923 at Chicago.2 At age 35, Philip became the father of Genevieve A. Granich on 31 July 1925.2 He was naturalized on 23 September 1926 at Circuit Court of Cook County, Chicago, Illinois.12 He and Zora Granich lived at 10633 Avenue "O", Chicago, Illinois 1927. They lived in this house for almost sixty years.13 At age 37, Philip became the father of Dorothy Josephine Granich on 18 March 1927 at Chicago.2 Phillip and Zora Granich were released from their mortgage of 22 November 1927 with Friendship Building and Loan Association of Chicago for 10633 Avenue 'O' on 3 April 1929.14 Phillip and Zora Granich were released from their mortgage of 4 February 1924 with Friendship Building and Loan Association of Chicago for 10633 Avenue 'O' on 3 April 1929.15 He attended the marriage of Draga Marasović and Jakov Radja on 4 May 1929 at Chicago.16,17,18,19

Philip Martin Granich is shown as head of household on the US census of 10 April 1930 at Chicago as Phillip Granich. He was listed as a married white male, 39 years old, owning the home valued at $4,000, not owning a radio set, age 27 when first married. He is shown as having immigrated in 1913 and has been naturalized, born in Yugoslavia with mother and father born in Yugoslavia. Before coming to the US the native language was Croatian. He did not attend school in the previous six months and cannot read or write but can speak English, was employed and occupation was 'gas producer' in a chemical plant, was not a veteran of any war or expedition. Enumerated with the head of household was/were Zora Granich, Marie Evelyn Granich, Joseph August Granich, Florence Barbara Granich, Genevieve A. Granich and Dorothy Josephine Granich.20
At age 42, Philip became the father of Phyllis Ann Granich on 4 February 1932 at Chicago.2 At age 45, Philip became the father of Lois Jane Granich on 5 February 1935.2 At age 50, Philip became the father of Carol Ann Granich on 1 January 1940 at Chicago.2 He and Zora Granich gathered with the rest of the family circa July 1942 at Chicago. Joey was about to leave for North Africa.21 He was an attendee when Andrija Marasović and Ivanica Marasovich were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with family members on 2 March 1947 at 10732 Avenue "O", Chicago, Illinois.22 He retired from 31 years of service with the General Chemical Division of Allied Chemical and Dye Corporation in October 1954. He and Zora Granich celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in 1963 at Rupcich Restaurant, 106th and Indianapolis Blvd, Chicago, Illinois. The party took place in the Rupcich restaurant on Indianapolis Boulevard and 106th Street.23 He attended the marriage of Jeanne Scott and Thomas Gregory Radja on 21 August 1967 at First Congregational Church, 1047 Curtiss Street, Downers Grove, Illinois.24 He and Zora Granich celebrating their fiftyth wedding anniversary in February 1968 at Chicago.23 He and Zora Granich celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary in 1983.22 He died of a stroke on 31 August 1984 at Chicago at age 94.6,7,1,2 He was buried on 4 September 1984 in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery located in Calumet City, Illinois.7,1
