Second Lieutenant Edward A. McCauley - 1899
     Edward Ames McCauley was born on 2 August 1873 at Jeffersonville, Indiana, son of John Strange McCauley and Mary Onins. The Social Security Application was a very important source because it validated the connection between Edward of California with the Edward of Jeffersonville, Indiana.4,1,7

Edward Ames McCauley was enumerated with John Strange McCauley on the census of 15 June 1880 at Jeffersonville as Edward A. McCauley. Listed as 6 years old, born in Indiana, father born in Indiana, mother in Pennsylvania.6
Edward was enlisted for service in the Spanish American War on on 4 July 1898 at Indianapolis, Indiana. Service was from Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana in Company E of the 161st Regiment Indiana Volunteers. Lewis C. Baird was elected captain of Company E. Baird had attended the US Naval Academy but did not graduate; he is listed in the Academy's Register of Alumni.
McCauley served as First Sergeant then was commisioned 2nd Lieutenant on 6 January 1899 upon the resignation of Captain Baird for personal business reasons. McCauley was mustered out on 30 April 1899.

The 161st Indiana Volunteer Infantry became part of Maj. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee's Seventh Army Corps, and spent part of the period of the Spanish American War at Camp Cuba Libre in Jacksonville, Florida. Later, the unit became part of the occupation forces in Cuba. As with all military units, it depended on its band for entertainment and to ease the homesickness that many of the men felt being far away from home for the first time.8,9,10,11

Edward married Pearl Annie Miles, daughter of William R. Miles and Maria Dana, circa December 1904 at California.2

He lived at 1296 West 37th Drive, Los Angeles, California 1916. In 1916 Edward registered as Republican. In 1916 Pearl and George did not appear on the registration list. In the voter list Edward is listed as a collector.13 Edward was registered for the World War I draft on 12 September 1918 at California. He is shown as 45 years old, working as a collector at Blake, Moffit & Towne, a wholesale paper house in Los Angeles. He was living with wife Pearl at 1119 Elrose Street, Glendale, California.1 He and Pearl Annie McCauley lived at 1131 East Maple Street, Glendale, California from 1920 to 1942 with George Edward McCauley. In 1920, 1924, 1928, 1930, 1934, 1936, 1938, 1940 and 1942 they registered as Republicans, except that in 1934 Edward registered as a Democrat. In 1920, 1924 and 1926 George did not appear. In 1926 Pearl "Declined to State", she did not appear in 1920. In the voter list Edward is listed as a collector, Pearl as a housewife and George as a teacher (In 1928 George was listed as a student).14,4

Listed as 46 years old, married, owning his house with a mortgage, born in Indiana whereas his mother in the United Statess and his father in the U.S. Can read, write and speak English. Currently employed as a "collector" for a wholesale paper company. Enumerated with the head of household was/were George Edward McCauley and Pearl Annie McCauley.7

Listed as 56 years old, married at age 31 years, owns his $3,000 home with a radio, born in Indiana, father born in Kentucky, mother born in Kentucky, can read and write and speak English, employed as a "collector" for a wholesale paper company. Shown as a veteran of the Spanish-American War of 1898. Enumerated with the head of household was/were George Edward McCauley and Pearl Annie McCauley.10
He was employed by Blake, Moffitt & Towns on 26 November 1936 at 242 South Los Angeles Street, Los Angeles, California.4 He and Pearl Annie McCauley lived at 2825 Mataro Street, Pasadena, California from 1944 to 1954 with George Edward McCauley. In 1944, 46, 48, 50 and 1954 they all registered as Republicans. In the voter list Edward is listed as retired, Pearl as a housewife and George as a teacher.15 He and Pearl Annie McCauley owned a second home at at Laguna Beach, California.16 He died on 16 July 1959 at Laguna Beach at age 85.17,5
