James married Isabelle Armour in 1902.3,4 At age 25, James became the father of James Towers Scott on 25 August 1904 at Alexandria.5,6,7 James became the father of Barbara Scott in 1908.7

James arrived as an immigrant aboard the SS Caledonia out of Glasgow on 21 January on 28 January 1911 at Ellis Island, New York, New York. Listed as 35 years old, married, able to read and write, occupation 'sketch maker'. Nationality is Britain. Last permanent residence was Alexandria, Scotland. Nearest relative on departure was Robert Scott of 474 Duke Street Glasgow. He is 5' 8" tall with dark hair and blue eyes. He was born in Greenock, Scotland. His final destination is with friend John R. Mallock of Nyack, New York. He is in possession of $50.8 At age 33, James became the father of Margaret Scott in January 1912.7,9 James became the father of George A. Scott in 1914 at New York.7 He was an engraver in 1916 at Chester, Pennsylvania.10 He and Isabelle Armour lived at 1135 Potter Street, Chester, Pennsylvania August 1916 with James Towers Scott, Barbara Scott, Margaret Scott, George A. Scott and Robert Stuart Scott.10 At age 37, James became the father of Robert Stuart Scott on 20 August 1916 at Chester.10 He was employed by The Apponaug Co. (dyers, printers and bleachers of cotton print goods) as a sketchworker in September 1918 at River Point Road, Apponaug Village, Rhode Island.11,12 He and Isabelle Armour lived at Apponaug Village, Rhode Island September 1918.11 James was registered for the World War I Draft on 12 September 1918 at Rhode Island. He was registered as "James Herman Scott" but signed his name as "James Herdman Scott". Shown as born 22 November 1876 with age as 41 years. Per John Newman, there were many inaccuracies in the registrations except for the signatures of the registrant.11,13

James Herdman Scott is shown as head of household on the US census of 26 January 1920 at Main Street, West Warwick Township, Rhode Island, as James H. Scott. Listed as a renter, 40 years old, shown as having immigrated in 1911 and naturalization petition applied for, born in Scotland with Scotch as his mother tongue as was his mother and father, he can read, write and speak English, occupation is 'sketchworker'. Enumerated with the head of household was/were James Towers Scott, Barbara Scott, Isabelle Armour, Margaret Scott, George A. Scott and Robert Stuart Scott.7


James Herdman Scott is shown as head of household on the US census of 15 May 1930 at 509 Race Street, Sunbury, Pennsylvania, as James H. Scott. Listed as 52 years old, owner of $7,000 home with a radio and does not live on a farm, married at age 24 years, has not attended school or college in last six months, shown as having immigrated in 1910 and is naturalized, born in Scotland as was his mother and father, he can read, write and speak English, employed as a sketcher in a dye plant, not a veteran. Spoke Scotch at home before immigrating. Enumerated with the head of household was/were Isabelle Armour, Barbara Scott, Margaret Scott, George A. Scott and Robert Stuart Scott.4
He attended the marriage of Hilda Gertrude Strauss and Robert Stuart Scott on 14 March 1942.3,14 He registered for the World War II draft in April 1942 at 26 Covel Circle, Warwick, Rhode Island. He registered as James Herdman Scott, shown as 63 years old, born in Greenock, Scotland on 22 November 1878. He is currently employed by the Apponaug Print Works in Apponaug, Kent County, Rhode Island. Mrs. Theodore Hill of Norman Avenue, Hisslgrove, Rhode Island, is the person who will always know his address.2
