Thomas Edward Bender was born on 6 December 1934 at Chicago, Illinois, son of
Edward T. Bender and
Cathleen L. Clark.

1 Tom worked for U.S. Steel South Works from 1954 (just before entering the Marine Corps) to 1973. The South Works was located on Lake Michigan between 79th Street and 91st Street. Tom's time in the Marine Corps was counted towards his total time with U.S. Steel. He left the steel mill to work his Import Tap business full time.
1 Tom served in the US Marine Corps from March 1954 to March 1957. Upon completion of his enlistment he served in the Marine Corps Reserve until 1962. Tom's specialty was as a Field Radio Operator with the Fourth Marines of the Third Marine Division. He was deployed to Japan and Hawaii. He remained in Japan and did not go to Korea with his unit because he was required to serve as witness in a murder trial. He earned the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
