Donna Lubell Quirke Hornik
Donna Lubell Quirke Hornik, age 4, of Chicago, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving and heartbroken parents, Sheila Quirke and Jeremy Hornik. Donna was diagnosed with cancer at twenty months old. Despite an early prognosis of two to three months, she thrived for ten times that, living joyfully, gracefully. In her too brief life, Donna danced on the stage of the Auditorium Theater, consumed a mountain of macaroni and cheese, worried the winter trees were lonely and cold without their leaves and finally enjoyed the big girl swing all by herself. Donna was singular. She loved three books before bed, her weekly dance class with Miss Shawn, making new friends at Baker Demonstration School, dinosaur bones, the color black and telling her baby brother Jay he was too little to eat eggs. Through her website at CaringBridge.org, Donna's story touched many. She will be missed. Burial is private. A memorial service will be held on Halloween at the Elliott Chapel in Evanston, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any of three charities: The Neuro-onc Research Fund, in honor of Donna, Box 30, Children's Memorial Hospital, 2300 Children's Plaza, Chicago, IL 60614; Jill's House, 751 E. Tamarack Trail, Bloomington, IN 47408 or the Donna Quirke Hornik Fund, 2649 W. Greenleaf Ave., Chicago, IL 60645, to establish a dance scholarship in her name.
