Dear brother!
First I can tell you that we are well thank God and we wish you the same good health. We received from Nikola Cavka 20 dollars in a paper that you sent to mother and two pieces in gold, which you sent to Josip and me. Josip went to Zagorje (northern part of Croatia) to visit him (Nikola), I was thinking about it, but it is far. If it were possible to go by road or train, I would go to talk to him about your life there. I heard that some people left Split, with them their families and daughters of Ivan Leskur (Rencin), if I new that I would send a letter for you. Nothing new to write, there was no rain from St. Anthony to small Gospa (Mother Mary) not a drop. The year is bad wheat is small and white and nothing from corn, we only found 8 kvarat, there is no potatoes or cabbage, if the fall is going to be nice there might be grma (I don’t know what that is). Animals are cheap ox the best one 3000 dinars, a sheep 100-125 dinars, corn 2.50-3 dinars, and wheat 4-4.50 dinars. All other necessary things like sugar, coffee, salt is expensive for example 1 kilo of coffee is 50 dinars, 1 kilo of sugar is 17 dinars and so on. Old people around us have died and younger got married, old women are still alive and girls got married. Now my dear brother receive greetings from your brothers Mate and Jozo, sister in law, nephew, sisters and brothers in law and finally from your never forgotten mother who is always expecting your letter. Write soon.
